Durable Base Powder – Designed to be ironed – this powder has been used with good success alone, but with more success either mixed with other Next powders, or as a stand-alone base preparation, under an appropriate Next Powder. We had success testing both ways – the Durable seemed to provide hardness and some additional speed when mixed with normal Next powders. In old snow we had really good success using it as a base under Zero B (now called “All Conditions”) or the Next Dark old snow products.
*Does it really matter what you run under your ironed paraffin, especially if you’re putting on liquids or fleece-applied block layers? Yes! It matters! We have seen for years that the way you prepare the base for your race layers is important. We have test data going back twenty years (with fluoro topcoats in play) to indicate that in some instances the base paraffin made a bigger difference than the topcoat. In general, Durable Base is a very safe, fast, and extremely long-lasting base for everything but the newest untransformed snow. In those conditions, it’s better to run two to three layers of the appropriate Next glide wax.
