Woodski Foot-Pedal Clamp

Product Description

Eight or nine years ago I build a pneumatic ski vise for our shop, with foot-pedal actuation. The clamp is always "on", until you step on the pedal and it pops open. There are several huge advantages to this system. The obvious advantage is the hands-free operation. When you can operate your vise without fumbling around and putting down tools, the work flow is much, much faster. The less obvious advantage is that the air pressure is constant, so that the clamp squeezes the ski regardless of its position. A normal vise just tightens to a certain dimension, and then if the ski slips, there is no longer any grip from the clamp to hold it in place. The constant pressure means that the ski is held much more securely, and with less clamping force than a normal vice requires.

When we saw the New World Wax Table that Peter produced, we asked him to come and look at the pneumatic vice in our shop. I had been thinking that a spring-loaded, cable-actuated clamp would be a great way to replicate the function of our shop vice for use anywhere. However, the task of design and fabrication was more complex in practice than in theory. Peter has done a great job designing and fabricating this device to be hghly funtional and easily servicable. This vice is so good that I hauled it all the way to Sochi for the 2014 Olympics in order to have the convenience and functionality of my home work environment. This thing is as "pro" is "pro" gets.
